Our skin is constantly being bombarded with toxic chemicals and irritants from the environment around us as well as being undermined by the mass of products marketed to us with unfulfilled promises and an unknown legacy, including the pollution from the discarded wipes which are mostly made from petroleum derived nonwoven materials such as polypropylene or chlorine bleached viscose.
Many of the wet wipes widely available contain harsh foaming agents like sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), as well as synthetic preservatives such as phenoxyethanol and the Parabens, recently flagged up as a concern for health. Parabens, including methyl, propyl, butyl and ethyl paraben, are just one of a large group of toxic chemicals that no-one has any idea about what the long term effects are likely to be if they are used every day on human skin.
There are a whole range of chemicals widely used in wipes about which we need to ask the question; shouldn’t we be more cautious about using products that contain such chemicals? People with sensitive skin should not only exclude the chemicals listed above, but also actively avoid propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol (PEG), Isopropyl myristate, and formaldehyde releasing preservatives such as imidazolidinyl urea.
